Starting its journey by the initiative of some visionary and dynamic intellectuals like Nabab Salimullah, Syed Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury, and Sher-E-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque, and holding the hands of Nathan Commission, the University of Dhaka has stepped in its 100th year today. Nurturing and yielding the most promising and vivacious trailblazers of the nation, Dhaka University is the most precious educational institution in Bangladesh. From the sweet chirps of birds to the hustle and bustle of the young enthusiasts gathering in TSC (Teacher-Student Center), Dhaka University holds every bit of spellbinding beauty.
The University of Dhaka started its journey on 1st July 1921. Nathan Commission was built following the discretion of Lord Hardinge in 1912. Barrister Nathan led the committee along with 12 other prominent personalities the then. Benevolent Nabab Salimullah was kind enough to grant the land on which the picturesque infrastructure of Dhaka University stands today. With its very first vice-chancellor Philip Joseph Hartog aka P.J. Harts, Dhaka University started its journey with the motto “Education Is Light”. Keeping the motto intact, Dhaka University has been the torchbearer to guide the nation’s most diligent and visionary leaders. At its inception, it had only 3 Faculties e.g. Arts, Science and Law, and 60 potential faculty members who guided 877 students. In 2020, Dhaka University has 13 faculties and 84 departments with modern infrastructure and excellence in research & education. Throughout the century, this university has not only integrated its students to the horizon of education but also the aura of valor, diligence, and patriotism. The proud leaders and prominent personalities of this nation like Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Nobel laureate Dr. Mohammad Yunus, Physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, writer Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Jahanara Imam, cartoonist Rafiqun Nabi, actors like Chanchal Chowdhury, a novelist like Humayun Ahmed, and singer like Fauzia Yasmin are the alumni of this very institution. Dhaka University has always remained consistent in its versatility, and this versatility of it proliferates its monumental contribution to the nation.
Developing 60 research bureaus and centers, enriched library, hundreds of seminar library, affiliation with world’s top universities in terms of research and studies, excellence in music, creativity in arts, conducting the largest convocation in the history of this country, Dhaka University has always exhibited its paradigm of perfection in these 99 years. This academy has been fostering cultural cognition and educational progressivism, which has made the nation united and what not. The heroic martyrs from Dhaka University led the language movement in 1952 and shed blood in the liberation war in 1971.
