The unexpected reconnection

“Mrs.Sengupta is such a lovely singer, isn’t it? And she is so friendly I must say. Yes, indeed this time around we will have a great time. The entire group seems to be quite amicable especially Mrs. Sengupta. I have already become quite fond of her. What do you say?’’ Rita asked her husband, Tanmay. Tanmay seemed to be lost in some thoughts and was hardly listening to his wife. His wife noticed it and said, “Hey, what are you thinking. Did you hear what I told you? What are you thinking; you only become absent-minded when something is troubling you. Tell me, dear, what is it?” Tanmay now recuperated his senses and hastily said, “Nothing is bothering me.
Everything is just fine. I was recollecting our journey to this beautiful town of Paro. The unwinding roads were just spectacular. You were busy chatting with Mrs. Sengupta. I don’t whether you have taken any notice about the sceneries.’’ Rita protested “I noticed, I was wide awake after all. But I was indeed enjoying my chat with her, we somehow connected well.” Tanmoy now said, “That I was very evident. Now let me sleep. We will have to wake early for witnessing the sunrise at a viewpoint.”
Rita realized that Tanmoy was not in a mood to talk and she soon switched off the bedlamp. The next morning, the tourist group of twenty-four people visited different tourist spots in and around the picturesque Bhutanese town under the supervision of a group leader appointed by a reputed travel agency. Rita was as usual busy talking with Mrs.Sengupta. Tanmoy now engaged himself in taking different snaps of the sceneries.
Mr.Sengupta came up and started having a conversation with him. He learned that he was a retired government employee. The days went along nicely for the group amidst lots of fun and frolics. They then visited the Bhutanese capital of Thimpu from Paro. But Rita noticed that her husband was unusually quiet throughout this trip. He always seemed to be a bit jittery. She enquired several times but did not get any satisfactory reply from Tanmoy. A couple of days rolled on and on the last day of their tour, they visited the town of Punakha.
That night when Rita was busy packing their bags she said, “I have exchanged numbers with Sima, I mean Mrs.Sengupta. She is such a strong lady I must say. Today she told me about her past. She fell in love with one of her classmates in college. They even had intimate relationships. She became pregnant but her boyfriend backed off. He was not ready to take any responsibility and he even started claiming that this was not his child. He disconnected himself from Sima and even left the city. She desperately tried to contact him through some common friends but nobody knew about that lech. Her parents also came to know about this and their lives were shattered. Then Mr.Sengupta who happened to be her neighbor and childhood friend entered the scene. He married her and even promised to take the responsibility of her son. His son is studying medicine now and was unable to join them due to his exams. I must say Mr. Sengupta is an ideal man. He has single-handedly saved Sima and her family from lifelong humiliation. ’’
Tanmay now nodded silently. Their sojourn ended and the group soon made their way to the New Alipurduar station to board their return train. Rita continued her chat with Mrs.Sengupta as Tanmay engaged himself in reading an English novel. It was just a night-long journey. On the morning of their arrival, Tanmay was heading towards the loo of the compartment, when he came face to face with Mrs.Sengupta.She had just freshened up. Tanmoy said, “Thank you, Sima, for not revealing anything to Rita. I am quite grateful to you.
I know you will always hate me for what I have done. But still, you did not tell her anything. You could have easily done that’’.Rita replied, “I can never even think of stooping so low like you Tanmay. But I don’t hate you; you don’t exist for me anymore. But still, I am compelled to face you every single day, Tanmay. ’’Tanmay replied,” I did not get you. We just met here after so many years. Why do you have to face me every day?”
Rita replied bluntly, “You will soon get your answer.” The train soon reached the station and the passengers were busy getting off with their items of luggage. Rita went towards Mrs.Sengupta to bid her goodbye, while Tanmay was just behind her with the luggage bags. She was shocked to see a young handsome boy standing near Mr. and Mrs. Senguptas. Tanmay now also took notice of the boy and was stupefied. The boy’s features were almost alike to that of Tanmay.
